Cardinal Hayes won the CHSAA Archdiocese Championship yesterday in a convincing 86-65 victory over St. Raymond (NY). Guards Joe Toussaint, Jaylen Murray, and Julien Soumaoro controlled the pace and put the Cardinals in a great spot to win. Murray continues to make great strides and is on track to solidify himself as one of the best sophomore guards in the northeast. He spoke to Prep Circuit following his team’s big win.

Q: You had a convincing victory over a talented St. Raymond team today. What’s it like to come out on top like this?

A: “One thing I can say is we have Joe Toussaint. The way he leads us and puts everything together is just perfect. Playing with him is just the best.”

Q: What have you learned from Joe Toussaint in your time playing with him?

A: “It’s amazing and I’ve just learned how to be a leader because that’s what he does on the court. He knows how to bring our whole team together and I’m just learning every day from him.”

Q: How would you describe your progression as a player to get you where you are today?

A: “I’ve just been working on being a better leader and do everything to bring my team together.”

Q: What is the latest with your recruitment? I know you have more schools starting to talk to you lately.

A: “Texas Tech, Quinnipiac, Dayton, Iona, Iowa and more are involved in my recruitment.”

Q: Your high school teammate Joe Toussaint is headed to Iowa. Does that make that option more intriguing for you?

A: “It’s a big option for me because I can play with my buddy again on the college level.”

Q: You have proven a lot this high school season especially on the offensive end. What do you look to add to your game next?

A: “Defense, I just want to stay aggressive on defense. I know my offensive game will come so I’m just going to worry about defense now.”

Q: Now you are headed to the New York City Catholic League playoffs at Fordham. What’s the mindset going into that?

A: I just have to keep working, me and my team have to all get-together. It seems like it’s all coming together and we are taking the next step.”
