The 2019-2020 high school season officially tips off in just about a month and we have a plethora of stellar top matchups we can expect for this year’s season. Top programs are expected to face one another this season including some of the nation’s most consistent programs like IMG Academy (FL), Prolific Prep (CA), Oak Hill Academy (VA), Montverde Academy (FL), Huntington Prep (WV), DeMatha Catholic (MD), and more. Below we take a look at the top ten matchups and others that we can look forward too for this upcoming 2019-2020 high school season.

10. Paul VI (VA) v. DeMatha Catholic (MD)

The WCAC has always been one of the country’s toughest conferences when it comes to high school basketball and school’s like Paul VI out of Virginia and DeMatha Catholic out of D.C are just one, out of many reasons, why. This year’s matchups between the two programs round out our top ten matchups to look forward to this upcoming high school season. Both programs should begin the season in the top-10 nationally, and if not, definitely in the top-25. Duke bound 2020 PG Jeremy Roach returns for Paul VI this season after sitting out his entire junior season due to injury. Prospects like 2020 F Earl Timberlake Jr. and 2020 C Hunter Dickinson return for highly ranked DeMatha Catholic. The dates for this year’s matchups have yet to be announced but both programs could possibly meet three times this upcoming season. Dates for this matchup have yet to be announced.

9. Bishop Gorman (NV) v. Oak Hill Academy (VA)

Another top-10 matchup we should look forward to for this upcoming 2019-2020 high school season will include two nationally known powerhouses, Oak Hill Academy (VA) and Bishop Gorman (NV). Both Oak Hill and Bishop Gorman made the 2019 GEICO Nationals field back in March and both will be looking to make the 2020 field. These two historic programs will meet in Springfield, Massachusetts as part of the famous Spalding Hoophall Classic. The matchup between 2020 SG Cam Thomas of Oak Hill Academy, who led the 2019 Nike EYBL in scoring (27.7 PPG), and 2021 SG Will McClendon of Bishop Gorman should be one to keep a close eye on. Bishop Gorman (NV) and Oak Hill Academy (VA) are expected to play on January 20th.

8. Roselle Catholic (NJ) v. Patrick School (NJ)

The state of New Jersey has always been known for its high school basketball and both Roselle Catholic and The Patrick School have been one of the most consistent and top programs in Jersey and also nationally. Over the years both have sent players onto the next level and every matchup seems like a dogfight when these two meet. This year’s matchups should be very interesting, as Roselle Catholic has reloaded their roster for this season headlined by 2020 shooting guards Niels Lane and CJ Wilcher (committed to Xavier). Both programs will most likely meet at least three times this year as both plays in the same division in the state of New Jersey. February 1st, 2020 will be one of out of possibly three meetings between the two and Roselle Catholic will play host.

7. IMG Academy (FL) v. The Patrick School (NJ)

2020 PG Noah Farrakhan of Patrick School (NJ) will have a chance to face his old school coming in January 2020 at this year’s Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts. Farrakhan helped lead IMG Academy to a national championship just last April and has now made it back to his home state of New Jersey for his senior season. IMG’s star studded roster will try and contain 2021 F Jon Kuminga, the nation’s number one overall ranked prospect in the class. This matchup should receive an over packed gym at Springfield College and both are expected to play on Saturday January 18th, 2020.

6. The Patrick School (NJ) v. Sierra Canyon (CA)

The nation’s number one prospect in the 2021 class, F Jonathan Kuminga, will try and lead his Patrick School (NJ) squad to a win over on what should be one of the most powerful teams in the country, Sierra Canyon (CA). The Patrick School should be back as one of the country’s top tier programs nationally this upcoming high school with the addition to Kuminga, 2020 PG Noah Farrakhan, and others. They will have their hands full with Sierra Canyon, as they are expected to meet in Minnesota as part of the Minnehaha Academy showcase in January. This game could possibly be nationally televised but that has yet to be heard as a official. Either way, this matchup here will be one of the top ten matchups we should look forward too for this 2019-2020 high school season. These programs are expected to meet Friday January 3rd, 2020.

5. Prolific Prep (CA) v. Huntington Prep (WV)

This top ranked matchup between Prolific Prep (CA) and Huntington Prep (WV) is expected to happen at the annual Flyin To the Hoop event in mid-January in Dayton, Ohio. Top ranked 2020 prospects will go head-to-head in what should be a thriller in the state of Ohio. 2020’s Jalen Green and Nimari Burnett face off against a loaded Huntington Prep squad featuring their own backcourt of 2020 PG AJ Hoggard and 2020 SG Dudley Blackwell. Both Prolific Prep and Huntington Prep will be trying to make the 2020 GEICO National field and this game right here will be a resume builder for the winner. Both programs are expected to meet on Friday January 17th, 2020.

4. Sierra Canyon (CA) @ Minnehaha Academy (MN)

Sierra Canyon’s loaded roster will be put to test starting early in the year 2020 as they are expected to face Minnehaha Academy (MN), who should be one of the nation’s top-25 programs, in Minnesota. Minnehaha Academy features top-5 prospects 2020 PG Jalen Suggs and 2021 F Chet Holmgren. We all know Sierra Canyon’s roster is loaded this season and headlined by top wings Kentucky commit 2020 SG Brandon Boston Jr. and 2020 W Zaire Williams. The Trailblazers also have a pair of young guns in top-25 prospects 2022 SG Amari Bailey and 2022 F Shy Odom. 2023 SG Bronny James Jr., son of the LeBron James, is also expected to receive minutes this year for Sierra Canyon. These two programs are expected to meet on January 4th, 2020.

3. Huntington Prep (WV) @ IMG Academy (FL)

IMG Academy (FL) verse Huntington Prep (WV) should be a national top-10 matchup in January 2020. The Irish of Huntington Prep will visit IMG Academy early January and face off as part of the Ascenders Classic on the campus of IMG. Both programs should begin the high school season nationally ranked in the top-5. Huntington Prep brings back a solid squad from last year’s team headlined by Duke commit 2020 F Jaemyn Brakefield and also bring in key transfers headlined by West Virginia commit 2020 F Isaiah Cottrell. IMG’s loaded squad this year will be led by 2020 SG Jaden Springer and Duke commit 2020 F Jalen Johnson. Former AAU teammates, Johnson and Brakefield, will be the matchup to keep an eye on as both are also headed to Durham to begin their college careers next summer. This game is expected to be nationally televised on ESPN2 on Friday January 10th, 2020.

2. Prolific Prep (CA) v. Hillcrest Prep (AZ)

A wild west showdown will be our number two-ranked top matchup we can expect to come this high school. Both Prolific Prep out California and Hillcrest Prep out of Arizona will meet at the 2019 Hoophall West on December 7th, 2019. Both programs should begin the 2019-2020 high school season in the top-10 nationally. Prolific Prep will be led by 2020 SG Jalen Green and 2020 SG Nimari Burnett, who both ran on the Nike EYBL with Team WhyNot (CA). Hillcrest Prep will be led by a monster roster headlined by Arizona commit 2020 PG Dalen Terry and 2021 F Mike Foster. This matchup should draw a pretty nice sized crowd and should be one of the best games we see all season.

1. Montverde Academy (FL) v. IMG Academy (FL)

The clear number one overall matchup we can look forward too for this high school season is without a doubt the battle between two Florida powerhouses. The IMG-Montverde rematch is set for next January at the famous Spalding Hoophall Classic in Springfield, Massachusetts on Sunday January 19th, 2020. IMG defeated Montverde during last season’s GEICO Nationals and where IMG won at the buzzer. The Ascenders add a few transfers to their 2019-2020 roster including top ranked 2021 F Moussa Diabate. 2020 G Cade Cunningham headlines the loaded Montverde roster for this season alongside 2020 F Scottie Barnes. This matchup will be intense and physical as Montverde will try to seek revenge from last season’s heartbreaking lost. Both schools are expected to compete in the 2019 City of Palms Classic in Fort Myers, Florida and could possibly meet there before January.
