Class of 2020 wing C.J. Wilcher from St. Benedict’s Prep (N.J.) announced on Friday he has committed to Xavier University. Head coach Travis Steele offered Wilcher in late April and ever since then has made him a big priority. Steele and his staff stayed consistent in their pitch to the sharpshooter, which proved to be pivotal in landing him.
“I would say their consistency and pitch to me,” said Wilcher. “You can tell if someone is lying because they start switching up what they are saying after a while, but I noticed that they are consistent in what they were saying to me. I’m very comfortable with them and before I even got on campus I felt comfortable.
“I felt like I could express myself without being interviewed,” he said. “I’ll also be able to come in and have the opportunity to play as a freshman. That’s a big opportunity for a freshman in the Big East and one that doesn’t come around that often.”
Wilcher really likes their player development and this is something he and the coaching staff spoke in great length about.
“The main thing that got me interested was their player development and that’s what they base their program on,” Wilcher said. “He said the first hour of practice they focus on skill stuff and getting their players better. That’s what I really value and for me to be able to do that at a high level can lead me to get to the next level.”
Steele told him that he can fit in similar to one of their former players in Trevon Bluiett.
“He said he wants me to play similar to Trevon Bluiett and be a guy who can score the ball, be a good leader, play hard and make a real impact,” said Wilcher.
Wilcher got the chance to watch Xavier a decent amount this past season and knows how he can make an immediate impact there.
“The way they move the ball and play basketball the right way,” he told Prep Circuit. “That’s something that I am looking forward to taking part in when I get there. I think I can come in and be a reliable shooter for them. If I don’t do anything else, I know I can do that for them.”
Mikah Johnson Jr., a class of 2020 wing playing for the NJ Bulldogs, has picked up an offer from St. Peter’s.
