UNC commit Day’Ron Sharpe had a strong showing at the Hoop Group Southern Jam Fest. The class of 2020 big man led Garner Road to the championship game with a good balance of physicality, athleticism, and skill. He spoke about this AAU season, North Carolina and more.
Q: You guys have had a very successful season on the Gauntlet. What would you attribute that to?
A: “We all play together well because we have been with each other for three years,” said Sharpe. “No one is selfish on our team and we play together. We have the same goal of winning a championship.”
Q: How would you describe the chemistry you and Carson McCorkle have?
A: “Carson knows me like the back of my hand and knows what spots to get me the ball,” he said. “He finds me in the post and just really knows how I play.”
Q: How do you see yourself fitting in at North Carolina next year?
A: “I think I’ll fit in well at North Carolina,” Sharpe said. “Their big men run the floor and I can do that. They want me to rebound and be active around the rim. That’s my type of game.”
Q: What has Roy Williams’ message been to you?
A: “He’s been telling me to keep getting better and be ready when I get there,” he said.
Q: Why did you decide on the Tar Heels?
A: “North Carolina has been my dream school and I’ve just been fascinated about it,” said Sharpe. “When I got the offer, I always knew I wanted to go there.”
Q: What has it been like to play under someone like NBA veteran David West?
A: “I’m just taking in everything that he knows because he is an NBA veteran,” he said. “I just take it in because that is something I’m trying to reach.”
Q: What goals do you have for the rest of the Gauntlet?
A: “The goal is to win it all so we need to keep playing the same we’ve been playing,” Sharpe said. “We just need to improve on our play at the beginning of games and we should do big things.”
